PPSA Updates
The UK Seagrass Symposium is taking place on the 9th and 10th November 2023. The Ocean Conservation Trust and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust are delighted to host this two day event to bring together practitioners, scientists, managers and communities from across the country. We want to highlight seagrass conservation successes, and discuss the challenges; sharing knowledge and experiences on UK seagrass science, policy and management.
The event will cover the latest in UK seagrass conservation, including seagrass ecology, protection and restoration, case studies and success stories, alongside peer-to-peer learning exchanges.

Here is the history as written up by Peter Harvey which takes us up to the late 80s. I also include a couple of bits of regatta History going back to Plymouth early regattas in the 19th C and post war Plymouth Week in 1949.
Since the 1980s, the main items that PPSA have been involved with were the foundation of the Mount Batten Centre (under Mark Heseltine’s chairmanship) and to a very limited extent the formation of QAB. In the 1990s PPSA received substantial funding from PCC (>£10) which paid for a substantial number of championships in those days, this stopped in 2000.
In more recent times the PPSA has importantly has representation on other bodies such as PPMLC and indirectly TECF as well as being a major contributor to the Water Events Diary. It has also been involved in numerous major events held within the port in past decades e.g The Transat Bakerly, Americas Cup, SailGP, European and World championships both dinghies and yachts. Hopefully we will continue to do so in future years.
If anyone would like to examine the associations history, all the archives are held by Tony Head and he would be more than happy for these to be borrowed short term, though note that there are 5/6 large boxes.

 The time of the regatta is a little later in July than usual owing to the tidal heights needed for the lock into Paimpol harbour. There needs to be a 10 metre tide to allow the free-flow through the lock (with both gates open) we need to get the whole regatta fleet through the lock quickly – and unfortunately the earlier spring tide in July is a very weak affair which doesn’t get up to the magic ten metre mark. |
| Also because of the tides, the regatta will run from mid-week to mid-week, with registration in Dartmouth on Wednesday 17th and the final day in Paimpol will be Thursday 25th. We hope that finishing on a Thursday has the advantage of giving more time to sail home after the regatta. |
 Unfortunately, again owing to the tides, we are unable to tie in being in Paimpol for Bastille Day on the 14th, but we’re sure Paimpol will pull out all the stops for us all the same. The format will once again include a stopover in the Channel Islands on the way to Paimpol – and by popular demand we will be returning to St Peter Port in Guernsey. The regatta will start with the usual two days of racing at Dartmouth before racing to St Peter Port for an overnight stop and then on to Paimpol for a rest day before the race around L’Île de Bréhat. |

Plymouth Fastnet 500 set to be a regular feature.
The 2nd edition of the Plymouth Fastnet 500 takes place on Sunday 13th August. Starting on and finishing from Plymouth Sound, this is a great option to see the Fastnet rock in all its splendour without the logistical headaches before or after the race.
Early entry discount is available right up to 1st July and for the first 20 boats there is an additional incentive of a further 5% reduction. There are also offers available to all to join the RWYC and take advantage of the members discounts whilst enjoying reciprocal membership to many of the top sailing clubs around the world.
Rear Commodore Oceanic, Adrian Gray said, “Following the inaugural race in 2021, we look forward to building the ‘500 as it is sure to be on many a yachtsman’s ‘to do’ list alongside other similar races. We will also be running the race in 2024 to bridge a gap to the ‘Original Lonely Rock Centenary Race’ which will see the original course being used for the first time since that first race in 1925.”

As you know, Plymouth Dinghy regatta is fast approaching, and we rely on member clubs to support the safety side of the event. The weekend is 10/11 June, and we need ribs and crews for safety boats and mark laying. Boats refuelling and berthing will be covered over the weekend.

At tonight’s PPSA meeting it was reported that a race official was rather terse with the staff at Longroom Port Control over VHF Channel 14. Longroom should be looked on as a friend of the sailing fraternity and have a responsibility to oversee all activities on the water including Naval, Commercial and Leisure. Certainly, at times they may not always be able to respond as quickly as you would like, but it should also be recognised that all communications are logged and passed as and when deemed necessary.
Therefore, can we always ensure that we are respectful and pleasant at all times in our dealings with Longroom.
As a matter of urgency, please could you pass this on to all your race officials to act on.
